The Korean-Soviet cooperation in fishing is expected to expand sharply
this year on the Sea of Okhotsk.
The Office of Fisheries disclosed that Korean deep-sea fishing
companies are pushing ahead with plans to join hands with Soviet
businesses in the aftermath of the U.S.''s drastic reduction of its
companies'' joint fishing with foreign concerns. As some Korean-Soviet
cooperation projects already have been signed and some are now underway,
the office predicted that this year''s Alaska pollack catch will reach
120,000 tons, 20,000 tons more than last year''s record.
The forerunner in the moves, Dongwon Industry, recently signed a
contract with Seaprimfico, a joint venture between the Soviet Union
and Vietnam, to secure a quota amounting to 20,000 tons of Alaska
pollack for this year. According to the contract, Dongwon will shortly
send two factory vessels to the area.
Last year, five Korean deep-sea fishing companies sent 12 vessels to
the Sea of Okhotsk and netted 77,753 tons of Alaskan pollack.
