Korean makers of hand sewn clothes who have moved operations overseas
are increasing their employment of Chinese workers.
The employment of workers from China which started on Saipan is
expected to spread to Central and South America.
At present each firm employs 20 to 80 Chinese. The firms plan
to raise the level to 50 to 100 per firm. It is expected that
the number of Chinese workers to be employed by Korean dress-making
firms operating overseas will reach 1,000 by the year-end.
The 12 Korean firms operating in Saipan employed more than 300
Chinese workers through the Chinese government from September to
December last year.
The wages for a Chinese worker in Saipan range from $400 to $500 a
month, more than 10 to 15 times as much as the amount he is paid in
his home country.
