He was a short and fat man, with a very large head and no neck.

In his earlier middle age he had been distressed by this absence of
neck.

But he was comforted by reading in a French novel that all the
great men have been marked by the same peculiarity, and for a simple
reason : greatness in nothing more of less than the harmonious
function ing of the faculties of the head and heart and, the shorter
the neck, the more closely these two organs approach one another.

그는 큼직한 머리에 목이 없는 작달막하고 똥똥한 사람이었다.

목이 없다는 사실은 중년이 초에 그를 우울하게 했다.

그러나 모든 위대한 인물들이 그런 특징을 가졌었다는 것을 어는
프랑스 소설에서 읽고는 위안을 받았다.

즉 위대하다함은 머리와 마음의 기능이 조화롭게 이루어짐을 의미하는
것인데 목이 짧을수록 이들 양자간의 관계는 더 긴밀해진다는 간단한
이치로해서 그렇다는 것이다.
