[해외유머] '토머스 비첨'

When a promised payment to a member of the London Philharmonic
Orchestra for extra service was not forth-coming, the man compained
to Sir Thomas Beecham, the conductor.

"I''ll assist you in writing a letter to Mr.Holt," Beecham said.

The letter was sent to the concert agent.

After a long delay, an evasive and imprecise reply came, but no monry.

Some time later, the player recalled the matter to Holt at a party.

"Tell me, who helped you write that forcible letter?"

Holt said.

"Mr. Beecham," the player admitted.

Holt guffawed.

Asked why he was laughing, Holt replied, "Because Beecham drafted my
answer to you."

런던 필하모니가 한 단원에게 추가서비스료를 지불하기로 해놓고 이행하지
않자 그가 지휘자인 토머스 비첨에게 푸념했더니 음악회 에이전트인 홀트에게
보낼 편지를 쓰는 일을 거들어주마고 했다.

그 편지는 홀트에게 전달되었다.

한참만에 회신이 왔는데 지불을 회피하는 애매한 내용이었고 돈은 오지
않았다.

그후 오랜만에 파티석상에서 홀트를 만난 그는 그 이야기를 꺼냈다.

그러자 홀트는 "그편지 아주 호소력이 있던데 누구 도움을 받았던 거죠?"
하고 물었다.

비첨이라는 소리에 홀트는 폭소를 터뜨렸다.

영문을 묻자 "내 회신을 써준 것도 그 사람이었어요"라는 것이었다.
