Offerings had been down the past several Sundays and the preacher decided he had to do something.

The next Sunday, as the collection box was being passed he said, "Brothers and sisters, I don''t like to have to do this, but there is a man in the congregation who is having an affair with another parishioner''s wife, and I expect him to offer at least five dollars, otherwise I will reveal his name."

Later, as he counted the money he found 20 five-dollar bill, and a two-dollar bill with a note that read "Forever hold your peace, I''ll have that other three dollars before sundown."

몇 주 계속해서 헌금실적이 저조하자 목사는 모종의 조치를 강구하기로 했다.

다음 일요일 헌금함을 돌리면서 목사는 한마디했다.

"형제 자매 여러분, 나는 이런 소리를 하고 싶지 않지만 저의 교회 사람부인과 정을 통하고 있는 남자가 있습니다. 오늘 헌금때 그 사람이 적어도 5달러는 헌금해 주기를 바라며 그렇지 않을 경우 그의 이름을 공개하겠습니다"

나중에 돈을 계산하면서 보니 5달러짜리 20장과 함께 쪽지가 달린 2달러짜리가 나왔는데 쪽지의 사연은 이러했다.

"해지기 전에 나머지 3달러를 봉납하겠으니 제발 침북을 지켜주십시오"
