An American senator had a friend whose company he enjoyed because the man always argued with him. They would argue far into the night. The senator loved the intellectual stimulation. One day the intellectual desperately needed a loan, which the senator gladly granted. From that moment on, however, the relationship changed. The friend began to agree with everything the senator said. After several weeks the exasperated senator, now thoroughly bored, blurted out, "Look, either start arguing with me again,or pay me my money!" -------------------------------------------------------------- senator:상원의원 company:동석,동행 desperately need a loan:돈을 급히 빌려야 하다 blurt:불쑥 말하다 -------------------------------------------------------------- 미국의 어떤 상원의원에게 좋아하는 친구가 있었는데 그 친구가 마음에 드는 것은 언제나 시비조기 때문이었다. 두 사람은 밤늦도록 논쟁을 했다. 상원의원은 그 논쟁이 주는 지적인 자극이 좋았다. 하루는 그 지식인 친구가 급히 돈을 꿔야 할 상황에 처하게 되어 상원의원은 기꺼이 그 돈을 빌려줬다. 그러나 그로부터 두 사람의 관계에는 변화가 생겼다. 그 친구는 상원의원이 하는 말에 한결같이 맞장구만 치기 시작한 것이다. 그렇게 몇 주가 지나자 완전히 진절머리가 난 상원의원은 화를 내면서 "이봐 다시 시비를 걸어오던가 아니면 돈을 갚던가 하게!" 라고 불쑥 내뱉었다.
