Lobbyist could not buy former Speaker of the House Sam Rayburn so much as a meal.


Spurning the conventional congressional junket, he would, during his 48 years in congress, take exactly one overseas trip--to inspect the Panama Canal because his committee was considering a related legislation.


And on that trip he insisted on paying his own way.


He refused not only fees, but also travel expenses for out-of-town speeches.


He would say, "I'm not for sale."


His integrity was certified by his bankbooks.


At his death at age 79, after decades as one of the most powerful men in the U.S. and a man courted by railroad and oil companies, his savings totaled $15,000.

국회의원들의 통상적인 공금여행을 일축한 그는 48년 동안 국회의원으로 있으면서 단 한 번 해외여행을 했을 뿐인데 그것은 그의 위원회가 관련 법안을 심의하고 있었던 파나마 운하를 시찰하기 위한 것이었다.


하지만 그 여행을 그는 기어이 제 돈으로 했다.


연사로 초청되어 출타할 경우에는 사례금을 마다할 뿐만이 아니라 여비마저 받지 않았다.


"나는 돈에 팔려다니는 사람이 아닙니다"라고 말하곤 했다.


그의 은행통장들은 그의 청렴성을 증명해주었다.


미국의 가장 영향력있는 인물의 하나로 몇 십 년 동안 철도회사와 석유회사들의 로비대상이었던 그가 79세로 생을 마감했을 때 그의 통장에 남은 총액은 15,000달러였다.
