A successful, unmarried woman had a married sister named Mary, whose life centered on her husband and children．

One day, the mother of the two women was talking to the single daughter．

"You’re not married," she said．

"You don‘t have a man to take care of you． What’s going to become of you?"

"Mother， for heaven‘s sake,"the unmarried woman snapped．

"I’m living exactly as I like. I make plenty of money, and I can spend it on myself. I don‘t have to worry about what some man wants. I go abroad twice a year. I have all the friends I want, and I’m not tied down to housework or kids. My life is wonderful."

There was a pause and then the mother said，" know． Don‘t tell Mary."

하루는 어머니가 한마디하셨다．

"넌 결혼을 하지 않았으니 너를 돌봐줄 남자도 없구나．어쩌려고 그러냐?"

"엄마， 제발요．난 딱 내가 원하는 대로 살고있단 말이에요．돈을 많이 벌고 있고 그 돈을 나 자신을 위해 쓸 수도 있고요．사내가 원하는 것 따위에 신경을 쓸 필요는 없단 말이에요．1년에 둬 번 해외에 다녀오기도 하고요．마음내키는 대로 원하는 친구들을 죄다 사귀고 있고 집안일이나 아이들에게 얽매어서 지내지는 신세는 아니라고요．난 신나는 삶을 살고 있지 뭐예요."

잠시 이야기가 끊기고 나서 어머니가 말했다．

"나도 잘 안다. 메리에게는 그런 소리 하지 마라라."
