The young man had been sitting in the drawing-room alone with her for a long time and it was getting late．

Suddenly, the door opened and her father entered．

"Do you know what the time is？" he asked．

The young man rose hurriedly, stammered a few words and was gone．

"Is your friend an idiot？" asked the father of the girl．

"Why？"queried the daughter．

"Well, I just asked him if he knew the time because my watch has stopped, and he simply bolted."


젊은이는 여자와 단 둘이서 늦도록 응접실에 앉아있었다．

갑자기 문이 열리더니 여자의 아버지가 불쑥 나타나 묻는 것이었다．

"자네 지금 몇 신지 아나?"

청년은 황급히 일어나 몇 마디 더듬거리더니 도망치듯 사라져버렸다．

"얘. 저 녀석 좀 모자란 거 아니야？"하고 아버지가 딸에게 물었다．

"어째서요?"

"아니 내 시계가 멎었기에 시간을 묻는데 부리나케 도망가니 말이다."
