When I arrived at a friend's house for a party， my old rattletrap looked pretty shabby next to all the fancy new vehicles there.

I announced to the other guests that they'd have to excuse my car,but my gardner requested my Rolls-Royce for a special occasion and so we had traded cars for the day.

Another partygoer said that he， too， had loaned his Rolls-Royce to a friend who wanted impress his new girlfriend.

Everyone laughed.

Then a few days later， out driving my old car I was embarrassed to encounter the same man.

He was driving a Rolls-Royce.

파티가 열리는 친구 집에 당도한 난 멋진 새 차들 틈에 낡아빠져 덜컹대는 초라한 내 차를 주차해야 했다.

정원사가 특별한 일로 내 롤스로이스를 빌려달라고 해서 그날 하루 차를 바꾸게 된 거라고 변명했다.

그러자 파티에 자주 다니는 사람 하나가 자기도 친구하고 차를 바꿔 가지고 왔다고 했다.

새로 사귀게 된 여자친구에게 잘 보이기 위해 그의 롤스로이스를 빌려갔다는 것이었다.

그 소리에 다들 한바탕 웃었다.

그리고 며칠 지난 어느 날 그 고물차를 몰고 거리로 나간 난 그 사람과 마주치면서 난처한 꼴을 당했다.

그는 롤스로이스를 몰고 있었다.
