"그의 주변에 있는 사람들은 모두 총에 맞아 쓰러졌다. 그는 여러 구의 시체들 밑바닥에 엎드려서 죽은 체 하고 있었다. 테러리스트들이 그에 대해서 잊어버리기를 간절히 기도하면서 여덟 시간을 숨죽이고 있었다. 그들이 그를 걷어차도 꿈쩍도 하지 않으리라 다짐하면서…."

"그는 부비트랩을 설치하려던 시도가 실패한 방에서 호텔 보일러실로 탈출에 성공했고，마침내 구조되기까지 24시간을 그 보일러실에서 숨어 있어야 했다. "

이 얘기는 톰 클랜시 소설의 한 대목이 아니다. 이 사건은 필자의 동료가 최근 인도 뭄바이에 있는 오베로이호텔에서 억류됐을 때 겪은 일화다. 필자의 다른 동료는 이보다 먼저 오베로이호텔에서 탈출했고，또 다른 동료는 바리케이드가 설치된 상태로 타지호텔 방에서 그날 밤을 보내야 했다. 이날 사건을 텔레비전을 통해 지켜보았던 사람들은 공포에 떨었다. 동료들을 통해 그날의 사건을 전해 들은 사람들은 가슴 절절하게 그날의 아픔을 느꼈다.

어느 누구도 그들이 그런 상황에 처하리라고는 생각하지 않았을 것이다. 그리고 필자는 필자가 아는 누구도 이런 상황에 처하지 않기를 기도한다. 이 같은 일련의 사건은 이런 상황과는 대조적인 한국에서 필자의 생활을 돌아보게 한다. 한국에서 생활하는 외국인으로서 필자가 새로 부임하는 사람들에게 항상 전하는 말은,한국은 안전하다는 것이다. 외국에서 얘기하는 한국 이미지 중 하나는 '매우 안전한 사회''밤에도 안심하고 밖에서 돌아다닐 수 있는 사회'란 점이다. 필자도 한국에 와서 한국이 매우 안전하고 잘 정비된 사회란 걸 알게 됐다.

국제 통계를 보더라도 한국의 범죄 발생률은 노르웨이 수준으로 세계적으로 무척 안전한 나라에 속한다. 이 통계에 의하면 중요 범죄 발생률이 미국보다는 5배，러시아보다는 10배 가까이 낮다고 하니 한국은 세계에서 가장 안전한 나라 중 하나임이 분명하다.

범죄율이 낮다는 것이 범죄가 없다는 것을 의미하지는 않지만，한국은 대체로 편안함을 느끼며 생활할 수 있는 곳이다. 전 세계에서 많은 나라가 종교 분쟁을 겪고 있는 것과는 달리 한국 사회에는 불교 기독교 천주교 유교 등 다양한 종교가 존재하면서도 별탈이 없다. 여러 종교인과 비종교인은 서로를 인정하고，존중하며 평화롭게 지낸다.

예부터 예의와 질서를 중요하게 생각해 온 한국 사람들은 대체로 서로의 차이를 인정하며，서로에 대해 인내심이 많다. 앞으로도 한국이 안전하고 평화로운 곳이기를 바란다.

Thinking about Mumbai terror

"The people around him were all shot. He collapsed on the floor beneath several corpses， pretending to be dead. Keeping still for 8 hours， hoping and praying that his captors would forget about him. Willing himself not to flinch when they kicked him.

Eventually， having also survived a failed attempt to boobie－trap the room he was in he fled to the hotel's boiler room where he hid for another 24 hours before finally being rescued."

This is not a paragraph from a Tom Clancy novel， it is an abbreviated description of a colleague of mine's recent weekend in Mumbai， caught in the Oberoi hotel. Another colleague escaped from the Oberoi much earlier and a third spent the night barricaded in her room at the Taj hotel. For anyone watching the events on television they were horrific. To hear such a story about a colleague makes the event even more poignant.

Nobody expects to find themselves in such a situation－ and I pray that no one else I know ever does， however it made me reflect on the contrast between life in Korea.As a foreigner here， one of the things I always advise newcomers of is that Korea is safe.One of the images of Korea held both by foreign countries and foreign people is that Korea is a "place where people can walk around and feel safe at night."

Looking at the international statistics， Korea is recorded as one of the safest countries in the world. Like Norway， it has a very low percentage of crimes. According to the statistics， the major crime rate is five times less than that of US and ten times less than that of Russia.Looking at this fact， I am pretty sure that Korea is indeed one of the safest countries in the world.

Low crime doesn't mean no crime， but it is generally a place that I feel comfortable in.Different religions coexist and people are generally tolerant of each other. May Korea always be safe and be in peace.
