필자가 몸 담고 있는 은행에서 앞으로 계획에 대한 여러 가지 주제를 놓고 토론하던 중 크리스마스 트리 얘기를 나눌 기회가 있었다. 올해 말에도 매년 설치했던 것과 같이 은행 빌딩 앞에 크리스마스 트리를 세워야 할지에 대한 것이었다.

많은 직원들은 이렇게 어려운 시기에 빌딩 외관 장식을 위해서 돈을 쓰는 것이 과연 옳은 일이냐는 의견을 내놓았고,다른 한편에서는 뭔가 밝고 기분좋은 분위기를 만들어 크리스마스의 진정한 의미가 뭔지 생각해보는 계기를 만들자고 했다. 축제로서의 크리스마스가 아닌,도움이 필요한 사람들에게 소망과 믿음을 전하는 시기.곧 '나눔의 시간'이란 크리스마스의 진정한 의미를 되새겨보자는 것이었다.

마침내 우리는 크리스마스 트리에 대한 합의점에 도달했다. 트리를 설치하지만 작년보다는 작은 것을 한다는 것이다. 그리고 건물 바깥에 설치하는 대신 로비에 트리를 세우기로 했다. 필자는 긴 토론을 거쳐서 크리스마스 시즌에 다른 이들에게 행복을 전하고 이들을 기억할 수 있는 크리스마스 트리를 마련하자는 직원들의 취지에 기쁜 마음으로 공감했다.

필자는 복이 많은 사람이다. 이 글을 읽고 있는 여러분과 같이 필자도 가족들과 함께 크리스마스 시즌을 보낼 수 있을 것이다. 자녀들은 선물을 받을 것이고,맛있는 음식을 배부르게 먹고,선물받은 장난감을 가지고 재미있게 놀 수 있을 것이다. 하지만 이 같은 축복을 받지 못하는 어린이들도 많다는 것을 기억해야 한다. 어떤 아이들은 크리스마스 시즌을 병원이나 고아원에서 보내야 하고,선물을 받지 못할 수도 있다. 병원이나 고아원의 직원들이 아무리 노력한다 해도 가족과 함께 사랑을 나누는 크리스마스만큼 행복하지는 않을 것이다.

필자의 은행 직원들은 지난 2주간 열두 살 이하 어린이들이 받으면 좋아할 만한 작은 선물들을 모으고 예쁘게 포장해 불우한 어린이들에게 전달했다. 이 기간 중 많은 직원들이 학용품,장난감,책 등 다양한 선물을 기증하며 자신들의 소망과 믿음을 어린이들에게 전했다.

필자가 전에 들었던 말이 기억난다. "크리스마스 트리의 크기는 걱정하지 말아라.어린이들의 눈에는 모두 30 피트 높이의 큰 나무로 보일 테니…."

이번 크리스마스에도 우리 직원들이 만든 30 피트짜리 크리스마스 트리의 축복이 많은 어린이들에게 전달되었으면 한다. 어린이들이 선물을 열면서 지금까지 받아 본 선물 중 최고의 것을 받은 것처럼 기뻐하고,아주 특별한 크리스마스 아침을 맞이할 수 있었으면 하는 바람이다.

Christmas Tree

This year,amongst all the discussions of operating plans for 2009,we had great debate about whether we should have a Christmas tree outside HSBC's main building.

On the one hand,many staff were concerned that in difficult economic conditions it is a waste of money to buy something so frivolous.On the other hand,many felt that it is good to have something bright and cheerful to remind staff of what Christmas really means.Not that it is a Christian festival,rather that it is a time when people of all faiths and beliefs think of others less fortunate than themselves － a season of giving.

In the end,we compromised on the tree.We do have a tree,but it is a smaller one than last year.Inside our lobby instead of outside on the street.I am glad to say,however,that we did not compromise on staff's desire to think of others and to seek to bring happiness at this time of year.

I am lucky.I,like many of you reading this article,will be able to spend this festive season with my family.My children will receive presents and will,no doubt,enjoy themselves eating too much and playing with new toys.There are many children in Korea who will not be so lucky.They may spend the festive season in a hospital or an orphanage and may well not receive presents.However hard hospital and orphanage staff try,this time of year is not particularly happy for these children.

I was really encouraged that many of my staff have undertaken to try and make some Korean Children's festive season happier by buying and wrapping presents during the last two weeks. We delivered the collected gifts to those less fortunate children so that they were not forgotten.

I was reminded of a phrase I once heard that seemed very fitting,"Never worry about the size of your Christmas tree.In the eyes of children,they are all 30 feet tall！" By our staff's actions this year,I hope that we will be bringing the concept of a 30 feet tall Christmas tree to a lot of children for whom opening a small present will seem like unwrapping the best gift they have ever received….
