When my 16-year-old son was learning to drive， we took short trips around town．

His skills gradually improved, and I allowed him to drive home after we dropped off his brother at college three hours away.

We were driving on a long， boring stretch of highway when I noticed that my son appeared to be lost in a trance, his eyes fixed on the road and his hands tightly gripping the wheel．

Fearing he might be getting tired, I asked him if he‘d like me to take over．

”No, Ma,“ he replied．

”This is fun. It‘s the longest video game I ever played.”


16살 된 아들애가 운전을 익힐 무렵 우리는 집에서 가까운 데로 단거리 운전을 하게 했다.

녀석의 운전기술이 차츰 좋아졌으므로 그의 형을 자동차로 세 시간 거리에 있는 대학에 데려다주고 집으로 돌아오는 길에 운전을 하게 했다．

단조로운 풍경이 이어지는 그 고속도로를 한참 달리다 녀석을 눈여겨보니 눈은 도로를 응시하고 있고 손은 핸들을 꽉 잡은 채 멍한 상태에 빠져 있는 게 아닌가．

피로해서 그런 가보다고 걱정해서 난 교대해서 운전하자고 했다．

“아냐 엄마. 이 거 재미있단 말야. 이렇게 긴 비디오 게임은 처음 이야．”
