Following an eye examination, the doctor gave the woman a prescription for glasses. Unwilling to face reality, she questioned the need for it and suggested she might get the glasses at a later date. Right away the doctor handed her a quarter. “If you decide not to get glasses,” he said, “please telephone me the next time you plan on driving so that I can call my wife and tell her to get our children off the street.” She got the glasses.


여자의 눈을 검사한 의사는 그 여자가 써야 할 안경을 처방해줬다. 안경을 쓰는 게 싫었던 여자는 과연 안경을 써야 할 필요가 있겠는지 의심쩍게 여기면서 훗날 써도 되지 않겠느냐고 말했다. 그러자 의사는 대뜸 동전 한 닢을 건네주는 것이었다. “안경을 안 쓰기로 하실 거면 다음 번 차를 몰고 나갈 때 나한테 전화로 알려주세요. 내 처에게 아이들을 밖으로 내보내지 말라고 일러줘야 하니까요.” 여자는 안경을 쓰기로 했다.
