The woman is a commercial airline pilot. She likes to think that by watching her, a rarity in a mostly male profession, her six-year-old son has an opportunity to grow up free of sex-role stereotypes. One day the mother overheard a friend ask her son what he wanted to be when he grew up. “A policeman,” answered her son. “Don’t you want to be a jet pilot?” asked the friend. “That’s a girl’s job!” her son said disgustedly.

그 여자는 민간 항공사 조종사다. 주로 남자들이 하는 일을 엄마가 하는 것을 보면 여섯 살 된 아들녀석이 직업에 대해 남자와 여자로 갈라 놓고 생각하는 고정관념을 벗어나지 않을까 싶었다. 어느날 아들녀석이 친구랑 하는 이야기를 엿들었다. 그 친구가 아들녀석을 보고 커서 뭐가 될 거냐고 물었다.

“경찰관”이 될 거란다. “너 제트기 조종사가 되고 싶지 않아?” “그건 여자들이 하는 일이잖아”라고 녀석은 정 떨어진 투로 대답하는 것이었다.
