The dormitory inspector of an American university was often called upon to unlock doors when keys were lost or forgotten. One night she was awaken from a deep sleep by a student who was locked out of her room. The inspector grabbed the master key, shuffled down the hall and opened her room door. There was the student’s roommate asleep in bed. “Why, your roommate is right here,” the inspector said. “She could have let you in.” “Well,” the student said. “But I really didn’t want to wake her up.”

미국 어느 대학 기숙사 사감 선생은 열쇠를 잃어버렸거나 방에 두고 나간 학생들로부터 문을 열어달라는 요청을 종종 받았다. 어느 날 밤 열쇠를 두고 나갔다 돌아온 학생이 문을 열어달라고 하는 바람에 사감 선생은 깊이 잠들었다가 깨어났다. 마스터 키를 집어들고는 지척거리면서 복도를 걸어와 문을 열어줬다. 그런데 방 안에 동료 학생이 자고 있는 것이 아닌가. “아니 동료 학생이 안에 있었네. 저 학생이 문을 열어줄 수 있었잖아”라고 사감은 말했다. “있잖아요, 저 친구를 깨우기가 정말 싫었거든요.”
