During the Cold War, it was customary in the Soviet Union to make a display of its military might through Mayday parade. On one of such occasions, after the tanks and the troops and the planes and the missiles rolled by there came ten men dressed in black. “Are they spies?” asked the leader of the Communist Party. “No, sir. They are economists,” replied he KGB director. “They will wreak havoc on the American economy with their economic predictions.”

냉전이 한창이었을 무렵 소련에서는 메이데이 퍼레이드를 통해 소련의 군사력을 과시하는 것이 관례였다. 한 번은 퍼레이드에서 이런 일이 있었다. 전차와 군대 그리고 비행기와 미사일이 지나가자 그 뒤로 검은 복장을 한 사람 열 명이 행진했다. “저자들은 스파이인가?” 하고 공산당 지도자가 물었다. “아닙니다. 경제학자들입니다”라고 KGB 국장이 대답했다. “저들이 내리는 경제 예측으로 미국 경제가 엉망이 될 것입니다.”
