Two unmarried women, retiring from their teaching jobs, pooled their resources to start a chicken farm. The two spinsters visited a poultry dealer. “We want to buy three hundred hens and three hundred roosters,” they said. “Three hundred hens will start you off fine, but, ladies, you don’t need three hundred roosters.” “We understand that,” the unmarried women assured him, “but we also know what it is like to be lonesome.”

교사직에서 은퇴하는 두 미혼녀가 합작으로 양계장을 운영하기로 했다. 두 노처녀는 양계업자를 찾아갔다. “우리는 암탉 300마리와 수탉 300마리를 살 겁니다.” “암탉 300마리면 잘해나갈 수 있습니다만 수탉은 300마리씩이나 필요한 게 아닌데요.” 업자의 말이었다. 그러자 두 여자는 확실하게 말하는 것이었다. “그건 우리도 알고 있어요. 하지만 우리는 외롭다는 게 어떤 건지를 잘 알고 있답니다.”
