Fly High with a Purpose: Ana Algabre Hernandez, Spouse of the Philippines Ambassador to Korea,

“The meaning of ‘Fly High with a Purpose,’ is about being the best version of yourself, so that you can become an inspiration to others.” She mentioned. A lot of her experiences were valuable because they helped her help others. What I felt through the interview was that she was not just a beautiful woman, but also a beautiful leader who has philosophy of life.

1. How long have you stayed in Korea as the Philippine Ambassadress to Korea?

We stayed here for 5 beautiful years in total. During this time, I have been coming in and out of Korea regularly to care for my children in Manila . It was not easy but with God’s grace, we happily got by as I balance my time and responsibilities to my children who are in Manila and to my husband who is the Ambassador here in Korea.

1. 필리핀 대사부인으로 한국에 얼마나 오래 머물렀습니까?

우리는 5 년 동안 여기에 머물렀습니다. 이 기간 동안 저는 정기적으로 마닐라에서 아이들을 돌보며 한국을 오고갔습니다. 쉽지는 않았지만 하나님의 은혜로 마닐라에 있는 내 자녀들과 한국에 있는 대사인 남편에게 내 시간의 균형을 맞추면서 책임을 다할 수 있어서 행복했습니다.

2. What are the most beautiful cultures of the Philippines that you would like to introduce to Koreans?

I would like to introduce the The “Mano po” or “pagmamano” culture to the Koreans because, like the Filipinos, The Koreans also put much emphasis on valuing, honouring and respecting the elderlies. I grew up with the “pagmamano” gesture as a way of greeting or honouring the elderly not only in our family but also in the community. The gesture is similar to “hand kissing” except that we gently take the hand of the elder with our right hand and we bow so that we can press the back of the elder’s hand to our forehead. Although there are modern Filipino families especially those who have lived outside the Philippines who have adopted the beso or kissing in the cheek greeting instead of the “pagmamano” culture, I still encourage my children to “mano po.” This gesture is also meant to allow the elders to give blessings to the younger ones.


2. 한국인에게 소개하고 싶은 필리핀에서 가장 아름다운 문화는 무엇입니까?

한국인들도 필리핀 사람들처럼 한국인들도 노년층을 존중하고 존경하며 가치 있게 여긴다는 점에서 “마노 포”또는 “파그마 마노”문화를 한국인에게 소개하고 싶습니다. 나는 우리 가족뿐 아니라 지역 사회에서 어르신들에게 인사하거나 존경하는 방식으로 “pagmamano”제스처를 하면서 자랐습니다. 제스처는 “손으로 키스하는 것”과 비슷하지만 우리는 오른손으로 장로의 손을 천천히 잡아서 우리의 이마에 어르신의 손등을 가볍게 갖다 댑니다. 현대 필리핀 가족 중에는 pagmamano 문화 대신 볼 키스 인사를 하는 필리핀 이외의 지역에 살고 있는 사람들이 있지만, 저는 여전히 아이들에게 “마노 포”를 권장합니다. 이 제스처는 또한 어르신들이 젊은 사람들에게 축복을 줄 수 있도록 하기위한 것입니다.

3. What if you had a culture shock or cross culture that you experienced in Korea?

My previous work as a Flight Attendant and my background as diplomat’s spouse allowed me to travel and live in several countries thus exposing me to different cultures and interactions with different nationalities. As a matter of fact, my roommate in Hong Kong during my airline training in 1986 is a Korean lady. My classmates were Korean who have continued to be my friends to this time.

At that time, I was fascinated by the formality of addressing each other by title and surnames like Ms. Kim, Ms. Lee, etc. since I was used to addressing colleges by first names. Eventually, we did call each other by first names.

3. 한국에서 경험 한 문화적 충격이나 교차 문화가 있다면 무엇인가요?

외교관의 배우자로서 비행기 승무원으로서의 저의 이전 작업과 배경은 제가 여러 나라에서 여행하고 살 수있게 하여 다른 문화와 다른 국적과의 상호 작용에 나를 노출시켰습니다. 사실, 1986 년 나의 비행기 훈련 중 홍콩에 있는 나의 룸메이트는 한국인이었습니다. 저의 동기들은 한국인이 대부분었고 이 시간 이후 계속 제 친구들이 되었습니다.

그 당시 저는 이름을 부르는 데 익숙해 있었기 때문에 김씨, 이씨 등과 같이 성으로 서로 부르는 방식에 매료되었었습니다. 결국 지금은, 우리는 서로를 이름으로 부르고 있습니다.

4. What do you think is the global manners index of Koreans?

Not sure if I know how to answer this question.Personally, manners and other forms of expressions are cultural and can be culturally distinct per country that should be appreciated .
Nonetheless, I find that Koreans are very polite and well mannered. I am impressed that with almost all of my encounters with a Korean, he or she is always ready to hand in a name card. I find this an effective way to network and an easier way to build friendship.

4. 한국인의 글로벌 매너 지수는 어떻다고 생각하십니까?

이 질문에 어떻게 대답해야 할지 잘 모르겠습니다. 개인적으로, 매너 및 기타 표현의 표현은 문화적이며 국가별로 문화적으로 다를 수 있습니다.

5. What do you think is characteristic of Koreans only?

The “pali pali” culture is perhaps a Korean characteristic. I see it as a Korean way of life and I love it. I like the way that time is used up efficiently and wisely by the Koreans. That Korea, with the with patriotism and perseverance of its people became economically progressive with highly developed infrastructure in a short while highlights the culture in an inspiring way. I also think that the “pali-pali” culture has also contributed positively in Korea’s achievement in technological advancement. In fact, I love the phrase “pali-pali” and have found myself using it to inspire efficiency and productivity for myself. Thank you Korea for the pali pali culture which I have tried to adapt with a hint of my being a fun loving Filipino.

5. 한국인의 특징은 무엇이라고 생각하십니까?

“pali pali”문화는 아마도 한국의 특성 일 것입니다. 나는 그것을 한국의 삶의 방식으로 보고 그것을 사랑합니다. 나는 한국인들이 시간을 효율적이고 현명하게 사용하는 방식을 좋아합니다. 애국심과 국민의 인내심을 지닌 한국은 짧은 기간에 고도로 발달 된 기반 시설을 통해 경제적으로 진보적으로 변모하면서 감동적인 방법으로 문화를 강조했다. 또한 “빨리-빨리 (pali-pali)”문화가 한국의 기술 발전에 긍정적으로 기여했다고 생각합니다. 사실, 나는 “pali-pali”라는 문구를 좋아하고, 나 자신을 위해 효율성과 생산성을 고취시키기 위해 그것을 사용하고 있는 것으로 나타났습니다. 필리핀에 있는 재미있는 필리핀 문화에 대해 고마워합니다.

6. What is the content of your book and What has influenced you the most as a writer?

My first book was written in Filipino language: “Binibining Stewardess” (translated in English as “Miss Stewardess” talks about the personal and professional experience of a Flight Attendant from the time she joined the airlines till retirement. The book is described as insightful, humorous and entertaining and a must read for anyone who simply loves to fly.

The second book, “Welcome Aboard: The Ultimate Flight Attendant Guide for a Successful Sky -high Career” is described as a gem for anyone who is interested in becoming a Flight Attendant. It is packed with helpful tips, insights and information about getting the job as a Flight attendant and becoming successful in the field. This book will help the reader understand the Flight Attendant career so that they can make an informed decision in their career choice and be able to acquire knowledge on how they can be successful in the said career.

Both books were written to primarily help and inspire the young adults not just to become Flight Attendants but to become better in their personal and professional life.

6. 책의 내용은 무엇이며, 작가로서 가장 영향을 끼친 것은 무엇입니까?

첫 번째 책은 필리핀 언어로 작성되었습니다. : “Binibining Stewardess”(영어로 “Miss Stewardess”로 번역 됨)은 퇴직할 때까지 항공사에 입사 한 때부터 승무원의 개인적 및 전문적 경험에 대해 이야기합니다. 이 책은 통찰력 있는, 유머 감각이 뛰어나고 재미 있고 비행기 타기를 좋아하는 사람이라면 필독할 것을 권해드리고 싶습니다.

두 번째 저서 인 “환영 탑승 : 성공적인 승무원을 위한 경력가이드”는 승무원이 되기 위해 관심이 있는 모든 사람들을 위한 보석으로 묘사됩니다. 승무원으로 일하고 현장에서 성공하는 데 도움이 되는 정보, 통찰력 및 정보가 가득합니다. 이 책은 독자가 비행 수행자 경력을 이해할 수 있도록 도움을 주어 경력 결정에 대한 정보에 입각 한 결정을 내리고 이러한 경력에서 성공할 수 있는 방법에 대한 지식을 습득 할 수 있게 합니다.

두 권의 책은 단지 승무원을 위한 것이라기보다는 청년들에게 개인적으로나 직업적으로 더 나은 삶을 영위 할 수 있도록 돕기 위해 쓰게 되었습니다.

7. What does the beautiful woman in the pictures you have drawn symbolize?

The beautiful woman symbolizes each one of us in our reflective state of joy and serenity. The “Koreana “and “Filipiniana“ series are painted in pretty but almost unrealistic setting to show the subject in her state of being happy and peaceful.
The paintings in my “working women series “ are mostly with subjects that are head-carrying loads. This is to symbolize the burdens that women are able to carry gracefully. The figures of the women are my brave expression of beauty and strength.

Madam. Ana Algabre Hernandez donated a paining entitled Cordillera at the Asean Korea Centre in Seoul. Shortly, She will also be donating paintings to another Asean multicultural house . This is one of her little way of thanking Korea for the warm welcome and generosity she and Philippines Ambassador to Korea Raul Hernandez enjoyed during their stay on this beautiful place.

7. 대사부인이 그린 그림 속의 아름다운 여자는 무엇을 상징합니까?

아름다운 여인은 우리 각자의 기쁨과 평온함을 상징합니다. “Koreana”와 “Filipiniana”시리즈는 그녀가 행복하고 평화로운 상태에 있다는 것을 보여주기 위해 꽤 비현실적인 상황으로 그려져 있습니다. “일하는 여성”시리즈의 그림은 주로 머리를 들고 다니는 물건들로 이루어져 있습니다. 이것은 여성이 우아하게 수행 할 수있는 부담을 상징하는 것입니다. 여성의 모습은 자신의 용감한 아름다움과 힘을 표현한 것입니다

대사부인은 서울의 아세안 코리아 센터에서 고통스러운 코딜리라는 그녀의 작품을 기증했습니다. 곧 다른 ASEAN 다문화 주택에 그림을 기증 할 예정입니다. 이 아름다운 곳에서 주한 필리핀대사와 대사부인이 머무는 동안 그들이 누리는 따뜻한 환영과 관대함에 대해 그녀가 한국에 감사하는 작은 방법 중 하나라고 그녀는 말했습니다.

8. I know you have been teaching at Sookmyung Women’s University. What do you usually teach?

I will quote the course description from Sookmyung University :
Course name : GLOBAL LEADERSHIP AND NETWORKING
“This course is lectured by qualified wives of Ambassadors to Korea. It provides knowledge on global leadership, multiculturalism, and global networking. Lectures include general understanding of country, as well as in-depth social aspects, status of women, and cultural aspects of each country. In addition, for each lecture, a female leader in a related field will be introduced. The lecturers will also share
personal experiences as Ambassadress, and aid the students to cultivate their capabilities as global leaders in the new information era. Through the mentorship of the two Ambassadress, students will be able to explore global leadership practices directly and indirectly, besides obtaining the opportunity to consult about their future career plans.”

To cultivate cross- cultural understanding and acceptance of the students, I introduced the Philippines and discussed about the people, language, food, as well as Filipino values, body language ,and business etiquette and protocol in gift-giving, meeting , dining and entertainment. We also talked about networking in a multinational corporate setting and how to effectively and positively deal with people in diverse environment.
I did talk about the women in the Philippines and their rise to leadership too. I also discussed some of my experiences as a diplomat’s spouse and as an airline employee so as to broaden the students’ understanding through my sharing.

It was a wonderful experience interacting with the students and given the opportunity, I would be happy to teach at Sookmyung women’s university again, or to teach Korean students in. general.

8. 숙명 여자 대학교에서 강의하신 것으로 알고 있습니다. 무엇을 가르치시나요?

숙명 대학교에서 한 강의안을 인용해서 설명 드리겠습니다.

이문화 이해와 학생들의 수용을 배양하기 위해 필자는 필리핀을 소개하고 선물, 모임, 식사 및 접대에 있어서 필리핀 사람의 가치, 신체 언어, 비즈니스 에티켓 및 의제뿐만 아니라 사람, 언어, 음식에 대해 논의했습니다. 우리는 다국적 기업 환경에서의 네트워킹과 다양한 환경에서 사람들을 효과적이고 적극적으로 대처하는 방법에 대해서도 이야기했습니다.
저는 필리핀 여성들과 그들의 리더십에 대한 이야기도 했습니다. 또한 대사부인으로서 항공사 직원으로서의 제 경험을 논의하여 학생들의 이해를 넓혔습니다.

학생들과 교류하면서 기회를 얻은 멋진 경험이었습니다. 숙명 여자 대학교에서 한국 학생들을 다시 가르친다면 기쁘겠습니다.

9. What do you want to say to women who want to be proud and happy as the protagonist of life?

FLY HIGH WITH A PURPOSE: Be the best person that you can be so that you can help or inspire others not for your glory but for God’s glory or for meaning in life.

To be the best person that we can be, we must arm ourselves with gratitude and integrity. With gratitude, we become positive and appreciative of what we have and who we have in our circle. This way, we are able to tap our gifts and talents to the fullest .
With integrity, we are able to live a life that is founded on truth, justice and goodness. We can only become inspirations for others if we walk the talk with sincerity. With integrity, we will do the right things even if no one is looking. Becoming an inspiration and helping others need not be a grand gesture. It can be as simple as mentoring child, or volunteering in an organization.
We don’t just give in this life for ourselves, we live for others too: fly high with a purpose.

9. 삶의 주인공으로서 자랑스럽고 행복하기를 원하는 여성들에게 당신은 무엇을 말하고 싶습니까?

목적을 가지고 높이 날아라 : 당신이 영광을 위해서가 아니라 하나님의 영광을 위해, 또는 삶의 의미를 위해 다른 사람들을 돕거나 영감을 줄 수 있도록 최선을 다하십시오.

우리가 할 수 있는 가장 좋은 사람이 되려면, 우리는 감사와 성실함으로 스스로를 위로해야합니다. 감사의 마음을 가지고 우리는 우리가 가지고 있는 것과 우리가 누구에게서 가지고 있는지에 대해 긍정적이고 감사하게 됩니다. 이렇게 하면 우리는 선물과 재능을 최대한 활용할 수 있습니다. 성실함을 바탕으로 우리는 진리와 정의와 선함에 기초한 삶을 살 수 있습니다. 성실하게 이야기를 나눌 때만 다른 사람들에게 영감을 줄 수 있습니다. 청렴성을 가지고 아무도보고 있지 않더라도 올바른 일을 할 것입니다. 영감을 얻고 다른 사람들을 돕는 것이 꼭 클 필요는 없습니다. 그것은 자녀를 멘토링하거나 조직에서 자원 봉사처럼 작은 일에서부터 할 수 있습니다. 우리는 단지 자신을 위해서만 생애를 바치지 않으며, 다른 사람들을 위해 살고 있습니다.

Ana Algabre Hernandez regularly speaks at colleges and universities on the topic of personal and professional development based on the book she has written about her career as a flight attendant. She also has a series of paintings titled, “Working Women ” inspired by women’s empowerment.
