Korean makers of hand sewn clothes who have moved operations overseasare increasing their employment of Chinese workers. The employment of workers from China which started on Saipan isexpected to spread to Central and South America. At present each firm employs 20 to 80 Chinese. The firms planto raise the level to 50 to 100 per firm. It is expected thatthe number of Chinese workers to be employed by Korean dress-makingfirms operating overseas will reach 1,000 by the year-end. The 12 Korean firms operating in Saipan employed more than 300Chinese workers through the Chinese government from September toDecember last year. The wages for a Chinese worker in Saipan range from $400 to $500 amonth, more than 10 to 15 times as much as the amount he is paid inhis home country.
