[한경에세이] 진정한 땀방울

어려움에 처해 있는 다른 사람을 돕는다는 것은 분명 뿌듯한 일이다.흔히 나 자신이 여유가 있어야 혹은 부자여야만 다른 사람을 도울 수 있다고 생각하지만,봉사라는 것은 길 가던 사람의 짐을 들어 주는 일처럼 아주 작은 마음과 실천에서부터 비롯되는 것이다.
내 경우 한국에 오기 전부터 개인적으로 적은 금액이나마 '사랑의 집 짓기(해비탯)' 활동을 후원해 오고 있었다.
내가 사랑의 집 짓기 활동에 관심을 갖게 된 것은 어린 시절 고향인 시카고에서 이것저것 손질하며 고치기를 좋아하고 우리가 살 집을 직접 짓기도 했던 아버지의 모습을 보고 자란 덕분에 무언가 짓는다(build)는 것에 대한 알 수 없는 익숙함과 친근함이 있어서일 것이다.볼보그룹코리아는 2001년부터 시작해 7년째 매년 꾸준히 '사랑의 집 짓기' 후원 자원봉사를 이어오고 있다.
나 또한 매년 70여명의 임직원과 함께 1주일간 진행되는 자원봉사 활동에 3일간 참여하는 것이 1년 중 가장 중요한 행사 중 하나가 되었다.
지난주 나와 우리 직원 및 가족들은 충남 천안에 모여 두 채의 집을 지었다.이번에는 해외에서 근무하고 있는 외국인 직원 4명도 이 행사에 동참하기 위해 특별히 한국을 방문했다.
장마가 지나고 찾아온 무더위 탓에 안전모를 눌러 쓰고 선크림을 발라도 얼굴은 새카맣게 타고 온몸은 땀으로 뒤범벅이 됐지만 남을 돕겠다는 마음 하나로 뭉친 직원들은 모두들 행복해 보였고 이를 바라보는 나 또한 직원들에 대한 고마움으로 더욱 뿌듯했다.
한 사회에서 어떻게든 서로간에 부딪치며 살아가는 우리 모두가 돈이든 서비스든 자신이 가진 기술이나 능력을 활용해 다른 사람을 도와야 할 의무가 있다고 생각하기에 나에게 '사랑의 집 짓기'는 금전이나 서비스를 무상으로 지원해 주는 것 이상의 의미를 가진다.사무실이 아닌 자유로운 분위기에서 직원들의 허심탄회하고 솔직한 목소리에 귀 기울일 수 있고 개인적인 친밀감도 느낄 수 있는 이 시간이 나에게는 얼마나 소중한지 모른다.
흔히 봉사하면 주는 것보다 오히려 더 많은 것을 얻는다고들 이야기한다.
봉사를 통해 진정한 땀방울을 흘려 본 사람이라면 누구라도 이 말을 이해할 수 있으리라.나를 위해서가 아닌 남을 위한 행동이 다시 자신에게 더 큰 기쁨이 돼 되돌아온다는 것을 생각하면 봉사란 참으로 묘한 매력을 갖고 있다 하겠다.
어쩌면 그래서 난 매년 뙤약볕 아래 지붕 위에서 망치질을 하는 무더운 한국의 여름을 기다리는지도 모르겠다.

Real Sweat

It’s very rewarding to help people in difficulty．
People often think that only a rich person can afford to help other people, but volunteering starts from small consideration and an act like helping an old person’s luggage．
I have been donating a small amount of money to support Habitat since before I came to Korea． I might have more interest in Habitat because I am familiar with ‘building something’ as I grew up watching my father build our house and fix different things since young at suburban Chicago．
After former US president Jimmy Carter’s visit to Korea on his worldwide tour for Habitat in 2001, my company accepted in Habitat as a company wide volunteering program， which gave me an opportunity to take part in ‘real’ volunteering．
Volvo Group Korea has been supporting Habitat for 7 years now starting back in 2001．
It became one of my most important annual schedule to take part in it for 3 days with over 70 colleagues．
Our colleagues and their families including myself built 2 houses in Cheonan in last week．
This time, 4 foreign colleagues visited Korea from overseas to be with us．
We also had employees whose wives and children participated, making it a volunteering site without an age or nationality barrier．
Even though sunblocking lotion and a safety helmet couldn’t keep the scorching heatwave after Jangma from burning our faces and soaking our bodies with sweat， they all looked happy thanks to the pleasure of helping other people．
I was also touched by and thankful to my proud colleagues．
As all of us who live together in a community have the duty to help others leveraging one’s own skill or ability, be it money or service, Habitat means more than just donating money．
By sweating myself， I can experience the true meaning of volunteering and think about teamwork with my colleagues．
Habitat gives me such precious time as I can listen to my employees’ honest voices and build relationship in free atmosphere away from office．
It’s not easy for me to have an opportunity to talk and get acquainted with my colleagues working at various sites like manufacturing, service, and office, due to my busy schedule and business trips．
They often say that you get more than what you give in volunteering．
Anybody who has sweated for volunteering service would fully understand it． Thinking that acts for others give you bigger pleasure than those for yourself, volunteering is marvelous．
That may be why I wait to do hammering under Korea’s hot summer sun every year．
