My great-aunt is known for her off-beat taste in gifts.
Every year, she has given my family hadncrafted kitchen utensils, so we were not surprised to receive a strange present from her one holiday:a long, wooden, oddly shaped ladle. To spare her feelings, we used it every time she came to visit. A few months ago, she joined us for dinner.
We were using the ladle and commenting on how creative she is in her choice of gifts.
"Nonsense!" she said, "You're much more creative than I am:I'd never have thought of using a shoehorn to serve stew."

해마다 우리에게 수공품 주방기구를 주시곤 하셔서 한번은 명절을 맞아 이상한 모양의 기다란 국자를 받았지만 이상하다는 생각이 들지 않았다.
고모님의 기분을 생각해 우리집에 오실 적마다 그걸 사용하곤 했다. 몇 달 전 함께 식사했을 때의 일이다. 우리는 그 국자를 사용하면서 왕고모님이 얼마나 기발하게 선물을 고르시는가를 화제에 올렸다. "천만에! 기발하기로 말하자면 너희가 나보다 한참 위더구나. 구두주걱을 국 뜨는 데 사용하는 건 나로서는 생각조차 할 수 없었던 일이거든."
