At NASA they were celebrating the great scientific achievement that had come after years of hard research when the head scientist received a congratulatory phone call from the President. He listened for a second and then said, “But that’s impossible… we could never do it….” He hung up the phone and addressed the crowd of scientists. “I have some bad news,” he said, “the President said that now that we’ve found intelligent life on Mars… he wants us to try find it in the Congress.”
미국 항공우주국이 여러 해에 걸친 고된 탐사 끝에 이룩한 큰 과학적 업적을 축하하고 있을 때 대통령으로부터 축하 전화가 왔다. 수석과학자는 잠시 듣고 있다가 말했다. “하지만 그건 안 됩니다…. 그건 도저히 해낼 수 없는 일입니다….” 전화 통화가 끝나자 그는 그 자리에 모인 과학자들에게 말하는 것이었다. “이거 반갑지 않은 소식입니다. 대통령께서 우리가 지능을 가진 생명체를 화성에서 찾아냈으니 이제 국회에서 그런 탐사를 시도해보라지 뭡니까.”
